Hockman Piano

It’s always nice to support small businesses, and even better when you are able to get a good deal in the process. Hockman Piano specializes in tuning, restoration, and other piano work, and these businesses are always a wonderful place to call if you’re in the market for a piano. They usually have an in-progress piano at the shop that isn’t yet on the market, or they have leads on other pre-owned instruments that will be available soon.

Kawai is a reliable brand that isn’t as expensive as Yamaha or Steinway, but the quality of the pianos is very high. They also have a large inventory of refurbished pianos, and you can buy a new Kawai digital piano or digital hybrid piano as well.

Should You Buy a New or Used Piano?

New grand pianos cost much more, but since they are often in service for many decades (and in some cases, over a century), they are often worth the cost. A new Yamaha grand piano may cost $20K-$30K for some models, while a Steinway will often cost $80K-$100K or more, depending on the model. Young Chang, Baldwin, Kawai, and other brands offer more competitive pricing and a high level of quality as well.

For reference, you can acquire a high quality used Yamaha grand for $10K or less, a used Steinway grand for under $30K, and a used Baldwin for $7K or less quite often. Of course, the specific model, year, and amount of restoration weighs into the cost. You can get a used upright piano that has been refurbished for as little as $2,000.

Isn’t It Cheaper To Buy on Craigslist or Facebook?

Yes it is! It’s also much riskier, and you do get what you pay for. You will see incredible deals, like $5,000 Steinway pianos, $1,000 Yamahas, and free models that you’ve never hear of before. But when you take into account the cost of moving the piano, the cost of refurishing the instrument, and the time spend without an instrument, the total cost doesn’t quite make sense every time.

It’s recommended to take a piano technician with you when you look at a used piano that you found through an online platform like Facebook marketplace. They can inspect the instrument and help you decide if it’s worth the trouble — sometimes they are, and sometimes they aren’t.
